Finding Chapter Members for Winchester Cathedral

Two voluntary Chapter roles, thirteen strong candidates, one Dean to satisfy. How Charisma found Winchester Cathedral's perfect fit.

A search for something bigger than a job title

When Winchester Cathedral needed two new Chapter Members, they weren't looking for typical hires. These are voluntary, deeply meaningful roles at the heart of one of England's most significant institutions, and Charisma Charity Recruitment was entrusted with finding exactly the right people.

Working in close partnership with the Dean, Charisma set out to fill two Chapter Member positions, each demanding a rare mix of qualities. Candidates needed to commit one day a week without pay, show genuine dedication to the Cathedral and its mission, and bring specialist expertise in either legal matters or visitor attractions. It's the kind of brief that calls for more than a strong CV. It calls for the right person, at the right moment, for the right reasons.

Casting wide, thinking carefully

Specialist roles need a specialist approach, so Charisma combined traditional advertising with proactive headhunting to build the widest possible pool of talent. The vacancy was placed in relevant publications and job boards, and promoted through Charisma's own website to reach people already engaged with the charity and heritage sectors.

But the real difference came from something advertising alone can't achieve: relationships. Charisma tapped into its extensive network of contacts, actively seeking out individuals who might never have applied through a job board but who had exactly the right background and outlook. This was about more than filling seats. It was about bringing genuine diversity of thought to Chapter, ensuring the group benefited from a range of perspectives and experiences.

The result was thirteen suitable candidates, each one a credible contender for a role that demanded both expertise and heart.

Narrowing the field without losing the detail

Finding thirteen strong candidates is one thing. Knowing which ones are truly right is another. Charisma's consultant carefully reviewed every application before putting individuals through detailed vetting interviews, testing not just their credentials but their understanding of, and commitment to, the role.

Working closely with the Dean throughout, Charisma refined the pool from thirteen down to six shortlisted candidates. Every one of them had the required skills and experience in either legal or visitor attraction backgrounds. Every one of them was genuinely passionate about the Cathedral and what the role could mean, both for them and for the institution. And critically, every one of them had the availability to make the weekly commitment work in practice.

That last point matters more than it might first appear. A candidate can have the perfect skillset on paper, but if they can't realistically give the time each week, the appointment simply won't work. Charisma made sure this wasn't an afterthought, but a core part of the assessment from the very start.

Two appointments, one strong outcome

The process resulted in two high-calibre individuals being appointed to Chapter, bringing fresh expertise and fresh perspective to Winchester Cathedral's leadership. Both candidates arrived with the specialist knowledge the Cathedral needed and the personal commitment the role demanded, a combination that doesn't come along often and one that Charisma was determined not to compromise on.

For an institution like Winchester Cathedral, appointments to Chapter carry real weight. These are people who will help shape decisions, offer guidance, and represent the values of the Cathedral for years to come. Getting it right isn't just about filling a vacancy. It's about safeguarding something much bigger.

Why this search worked

What made this recruitment successful wasn't a single tactic but a combination of approaches, each reinforcing the other. Advertising cast the net wide. Headhunting reached the people who wouldn't otherwise have applied. Careful vetting ensured skills and character were both properly tested. And close collaboration with the Dean meant every decision was grounded in what the Cathedral actually needed, not just what looked good on paper.

It's an approach that reflects how Charisma works across the charity and heritage sectors more broadly: treating every search as unique, understanding that voluntary and specialist roles need just as much rigour as any paid position, and never losing sight of the fact that the right appointment can shape an organisation's future for the better.

Winchester Cathedral now has two committed, capable individuals helping guide its Chapter, found through a process built on patience, precision and genuine partnership.
