Finding the right fit, twice over: how Charisma helped World Vision UK appoint their Scotland Area Manager

When the first candidate said no, we didn't give up. Here's how we found World Vision UK their perfect match.

World Vision UK is an international Christian children's charity with a mission as vast as it is vital: bringing hope to millions of children in some of the world's hardest places. When the organisation decided to invest in deepening its relationships with churches, partners and supporters across Scotland, they needed a Scotland Area Manager who could genuinely carry that mission forward. They turned to Charisma to find them.

Understanding the brief

This wasn't a role that could be filled by posting a job advert and hoping for the best. World Vision UK needed someone who understood the particular landscape of Christian charity fundraising, who could build meaningful, lasting relationships with churches across Scotland, and who cared deeply about the cause. Cause alignment wasn't just a nice-to-have. For a role like this, it was essential.

We worked closely with the team at World Vision UK to design a recruitment campaign that reflected the heart of their mission. That meant combining a targeted marketing campaign with thorough database searches and proactive headhunting, going out to find the right people rather than waiting for them to find us.

A strong start, and an unexpected setback

The first campaign performed well. It attracted 23 applications, nine candidates were shortlisted, and four were invited to formal interview. A strong candidate emerged and was offered the role. Then, shortly after the offer was made, they declined.

It's a situation that can feel deflating, but at Charisma, we see moments like this as an opportunity to do the job even better the second time around. Recruitment is rarely a straight line, and our commitment to finding the right person doesn't waver because the path takes an unexpected turn.

Back to market, at no extra cost

We returned to market for a second campaign, at no additional expense to World Vision UK. This time, with everything we had learned from the first campaign, we approached the search with renewed energy and an even more proactive headhunting strategy.

The results spoke for themselves. The second campaign attracted 26 applications. Eleven candidates were shortlisted, and five progressed to formal interview. After a thoughtful and prayerful selection process, an outstanding Scotland Area Manager was appointed.

"The team are doing great, we're thrilled with their progress and feel like we've hit the jackpot in recruiting such a brilliant group of people." — World Vision UK

The right person, by every measure

What made the appointed candidate so compelling wasn't just their track record. They brought a combination of experience from other Christian charities, a proven ability to build strong church partnerships, and something that genuinely delighted the World Vision UK team: they had actually been a supporter of World Vision UK before applying for the role.

That kind of authentic connection to the cause is something you simply cannot manufacture. It signals that a candidate isn't just taking a job, they're joining a mission they already believe in. That matters enormously for a role built on deepening relationships and inspiring others to give.

Why persistence matters in recruitment

This appointment is a good reminder of something we believe strongly at Charisma: great recruitment isn't about getting lucky first time, it's about having the tenacity and expertise to keep going until you find the right person. A first campaign that doesn't end in appointment isn't a failure. It's part of a thorough and honest process.

World Vision UK trusted us to stay the course, and we're proud to have delivered an appointment that has already made a positive impression on the team.

Finding leaders who share your mission

At Charisma, we specialise in recruiting for charities and mission-led organisations, and we understand that the stakes are high. The people you appoint carry your values into the world. They build relationships on your behalf. They represent what you stand for.

Whether you're looking for senior leadership, specialist roles, or the kind of hire that quietly transforms a team, we're here to help you find them.

If you're thinking about your next appointment, we'd love to have a conversation.
