Bible Society is inviting applications for three new Trustees, ahead of a deliberate, staged transition in its governance.

The current Treasurer and the current Chair of the People & Remuneration Committee both have around two years left in post. Rather than wait until those seats fall vacant, the Board is appointing their successors now; each will join as a Trustee, serve on the relevant committee, and shadow the outgoing chair over a planned transition before formally taking on the role. It is a considered approach to succession, and a rare opportunity to learn a 200-year-old charity's governance at a proper pace before assuming responsibility for one of these areas.

The third appointment, a Trustee with expertise in digital, AI and innovation is also required, to help the Board make wise, confident and ethical use of technology in pursuit of Bible Society's mission.

All three will sit on a Board governing a charity that has translated and distributed the Bible in people's own languages since 1804, and is today active in around 240 countries and regions, from Bible translation in the field to a faith and society think tank at home. The time commitment is modest relative to that scope: four in-person Board meetings a year, a January retreat, and committee support that equates to 10-12 days in total.
 

Across all three roles, we are looking for a spiritually mature Christian faith, the confidence to speak your mind and be challenged in return, and a genuine willingness to contribute beyond your own specialism. Bible Society works interconfessionally and welcomes applications from Christians of every tradition.

Eighteen schools. Nearly 9,500 children. A Trust that's grown from eight schools to eighteen in just over five years, now needs to add to its Board. 

STCAT was built through merger and rapid expansion, and is now shifting from fast growth to consolidation; building the structures and capacity to match its current scale, and becoming a more outward-facing voice in Catholic education, with the Diocese, the Department for Education and the wider sector. Whichever role fits you, you'll be joining at the moment that shift is happening, not after it's done.

Ask any current Director to describe the Board and the same words come up, unprompted; collegiate, professional, and, more than once, a family. People who mostly didn't know each other have built something rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, robust enough to hold the executive team to account, but without anyone bringing their ego to the table.

Chair of the Board of Directors
You'll line manage the CEO, chair a Board of this size and culture, and increasingly become the person representing STCAT externally as the Trust looks outward. You don't need an education background, the Board actively welcomes Chairs from outside it, but you'll need significant senior leadership or board-level experience, real confidence reading a budget, and genuine experience chairing meetings and managing group dynamics.

Be realistic about the time; 5 to 6 days a month, and regular travel across Luton, Buckinghamshire and Slough. The Directors are working to bring that commitment down over time as they recruit to the Board, but it's real now.

Director (Trustee)
STCAT's Board was built for nine Directors. For a stretch, while the Trust doubled its schools, it ran on seven, which is why more than one new Director is needed now. You don't need to be a specialist, STCAT has professional advisers for that, but you do need the confidence to ask the questions nobody else is asking and work with the Board to support the executive team.

Day to day, that's five Board meetings a year, a seat on a committee where your expertise counts, and becoming Link Director to a small number of schools, visiting at least one Local Academy Committee meeting a year to see what the Board's decisions mean on the ground. Roughly two days a month. We're especially keen to hear from people with real expertise in finance, HR, legal and regulatory compliance, property and estates, risk, safeguarding, mental health, technology, or marketing and communications.

Not sure which role fits? Say so. Some Directors go on to become strong Chairs once they know the Board, and the current Chair is available for a handover period. Raise it in your first conversation with Adam.

Both posts carry a genuine occupational requirement; you'll need to be a practising Catholic and genuinely committed to Catholic Social Teaching.

Both are voluntary roles, appointed by the Bishop of Northampton for a four-year term, renewable for up to two further terms.

We're looking for a skilled and proactive Finance Manager to join the team in Keswick. Reporting to the Director of Finance and managing the Finance Assistant, you'll lead the day-to-day finance function, provide high-quality financial reporting and analysis, and help ensure the ministry's resources are stewarded effectively for maximum Kingdom impact. You'll also play a key role in developing financial systems and supporting the transition from Sage to Xero.

As Director of Finance and Resources, you'll sit on the Senior Leadership Team with genuine breadth of responsibility; financial strategy and management, investments, treasury, risk, legal and regulatory compliance, property and facilities, IT and cyber security, and corporate governance. You'll also hold oversight of CMS's residual pension-related responsibilities following the transfer of its defined-benefit pension liabilities, one of the more technical, long-tail parts of the brief.

It's a lot under one roof, and that's the honest challenge - this isn't a role for someone who wants to specialise in just one thing. You'll move comfortably between a board paper on investment strategy and a decision about the office lease, often in the same week. In return, you get real influence; you'll be a trusted adviser to the CEO and board, four direct reports (Head of Finance, Head of ICT, Facilities Manager and Head of Legal) who need your steer, and a seat at the table where CMS's biggest decisions get made.

We're looking for a qualified accountant with senior finance leadership experience, ideally from a charity, not-for-profit or values-led organisation, who can operate credibly at executive and board level. You'll know your way around financial planning, audit, internal controls and management reporting, and you'll have led teams before.

But the technical skills are only half of it. CMS needs someone with the wisdom to balance prudent stewardship against a sensible appetite for risk, the courage to hold a firm line when it matters, and the humility to lead in a way that lets other people do their best work. Above all, you'll believe that finance exists to serve the mission, not the other way round.
