As an ethical, values-focused recruiter, EDI is a crucial part of what we do. When no salary is listed, white male applicants tend to ask for a higher wage than women and people from ethnic minority groups. It’s called the “ask gap” and one ridiculously easy way to stop it is to display salaries. Yet here we are, with companies still putting “competitive salary” in job descriptions *sigh*.We also offer pro-bono CV and cover letter support to members of Black on Board, an initiative set up in response to De Montford University research that found less than 1% of boardrooms across the UK had any Black or Minority Ethnicity (BME) representation. As consultants, part of our role is to gently challenge clients when they (often inadvertently) create barriers to people applying. We focus on the skills and experience that are essential for the role, instead of reverting to yardsticks of privilege, like degrees. Fast forward to today… times have changed and so have we.
